Job Description

Outside Sales Representative
Steel Stair Systems | Remote West and Central Territory

Summary

The Outside Sales Representative will develop new business and expand customer relationships for a manufacturer of steel stair systems, railings, and landings. This remote role covers a West-to-Central U.S. territory, with particular emphasis on markets from California through Texas.

The ideal candidate understands construction-driven sales cycles and can build relationships with general contractors, subcontractors, developers, architects, erectors, and other project stakeholders. Success requires disciplined territory development, accurate opportunity management, consultative selling, and regular travel throughout the assigned region.

Essential Functions

• Develop and execute a territory plan that increases qualified opportunities, revenue, margin, and market share across the western  and central United States.
• Identify and pursue commercial and industrial construction projects requiring fabricated steel stairs, railings, landings, and related systems.
• Build long-term relationships with general contractors, subcontractors, developers, architects, erectors, and other construction stakeholders.
• Qualify opportunities, uncover project requirements, coordinate estimates and quotations, and guide customers through the complete sales cycle.
• Review plans, specifications, schedules, and bid requirements closely enough to communicate customer needs accurately to estimating, engineering, and operations teams.
• Maintain a disciplined pipeline, document activity in the CRM, prepare forecasts, and provide timely updates on opportunities, risks, and next steps.
• Negotiate commercial terms while protecting margin and setting clear expectations for scope, schedule, delivery, and service.
• Coordinate with estimating, detailing, engineering, fabrication, project management, and leadership to support a smooth customer experience.
• Monitor regional construction activity, competitor positioning, and customer feedback to identify new markets and improve sales strategy.
• Travel regularly throughout the assigned territory for customer meetings, project visits, trade events, and relationship development.

Qualifications

• Five or more years of successful outside sales or business-development experience in structural steel, miscellaneous metals, architectural metals, commercial construction, or a closely related field.
• Demonstrated ability to generate new business, develop a territory, build key accounts, and manage a project-based sales pipeline.
• Experience working with general contractors, subcontractors, developers, architects, erectors, or other construction decision-makers.
• Working knowledge of construction drawings, specifications, bid processes, quotations, schedules, and contract requirements.
• Strong consultative-selling, presentation, negotiation, relationship-management, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to coordinate effectively with estimating, engineering, fabrication, project management, and operations teams.
• Proficiency with CRM systems, Microsoft Office, sales forecasting, and activity reporting.
• Associate degree in business, construction, engineering, or a related field is preferred; equivalent relevant experience will be considered.
• Residence within the California-to-Texas territory, with convenient access to commercial air travel and willingness to travel regularly.

Compensation and Benefits

Base salary range: $90,000-$110,000 plus commission. General benefits include health coverage, dental coverage, and paid time off.
