Job Description

Estimator

Steel Stairs, Railings, and Miscellaneous Metals | Remote

Position Summary

The Estimator will prepare accurate, complete, and competitive estimates for fabricated steel stair, railing, ladder, and miscellaneous-metals projects. This remote role requires strong drawing interpretation, disciplined quantity takeoffs, clear scope development, and close coordination with suppliers, detailers, engineering, fabrication, and project management.

Essential Functions

  • Perform detailed quantity takeoffs from architectural and structural drawings and specifications for steel pan stairs, monumental stairs, handrails, guardrails, ladders, and related miscellaneous metals.
  • Build complete estimates covering materials, shop fabrication hours, finishes, engineering, freight, and project-specific costs.
  • Review bid documents to identify scope, exclusions, alternates, schedule requirements, and delegated-design responsibilities.
  • Prepare clear proposals and scope letters defining inclusions, exclusions, assumptions, and qualifications.
  • Request and compare quotations from steel suppliers, galvanizers, finishers, detailers, and vendors.
  • Develop and submit RFIs and attend pre-bid meetings to clarify project requirements.
  • Track bid status and results, and provide a thorough turnover package for awarded work.
  • Maintain organized estimate files and manage multiple bids under firm deadlines.

Qualifications

  • Three to five or more years of estimating experience in structural steel, miscellaneous metals, or stair and rail fabrication.
  • Strong blueprint-reading skills and knowledge of stair, railing, ladder, and miscellaneous-metals fabrication.
  • Working knowledge of building codes and standards relevant to stairs, handrails, and guards.
  • Proficiency with Bluebeam or comparable takeoff software and Microsoft Excel.
  • Ability to develop complete material and labor estimates and document scope clearly.
  • Strong organization, accuracy, communication, and time-management skills.
  • Shop or field experience in metal fabrication is strongly preferred.
  • Associate degree in construction, engineering, drafting, or a related field is preferred; equivalent experience will be considered.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary range: $85,000-$115,000. General benefits include health coverage, dental coverage, and paid time off.
